One of the best things about living in San Francisco are the frequent performances from Dirtybirders. Justin Martin and Nick Monaco threw an epic dance party to a basement packed with diehard fans at Monarch this past weekend. Martin’s music flawlessly combines melody while still maintaining that filthy deep house sound. It’s the small nuances that he adds to his tracks, like birds chirping, that make his sound unfailingly out of the ordinary. Some of my favorite tunes from the night were as follows:

I often cringe at the idea of classic songs being remixed, but once in a while one comes along that knocks your socks off. The Golden Pony had the ingenuity to introduce a disco beat to “Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, transforming a somber tune into one that is upbeat and groovy… Bravo! Also, love the French Bulldog.
Their remix of “Fuck the Pain Away” by Peaches combines deep house and funk beautifully. I’ll also take the excuse to be obsessed with this high school throwback all over again!

I had the pleasure of meeting Trevor Bones of Gotta Dance Dirty when he spun at Harlot in San Francisco last weekend. When asked for his favorite producers, he recommended Tchami, and I can definitely see why. Tchami is a Parisian producer whose tracks have a specific sound and energy that I can only describe as unique, addicting and dance-inducing. The lack of information on him makes him seem a bit mysterious but I have no doubt that this is one cool dude. If you go to his Janet Jackson remix on SoundCloud and click “Filet Mignon” you will download a secret mixtape…awesome.

Shadow Child and Kry Wolf have more in common than just their wonderfully emo-sounding names. They are both UK-based and recently started their own label together called Food Music. Shadow Child and Kry Wolf as separate ingredients are great, but mix them up and you get something gourmet. “So High” by Shadow Child is such a heavy track that it makes me giddy. I want to listen to this track in a room full of huge speakers.
Kry Wolf has become a force to be reckoned with in the underground UK scene over the last couple of months. There is such a wide range in their style of music that they have something for everyone to enjoy.

I learned about Motez when “Take Off” was featured in one of Shadow Child’s mixes. Not surprisingly, Dave Spoon (aka Shadow Child) snatched up the talented Bahgdad-born, Aussie transplant for his new label Food Music. While his original work is fantastic, some of my favorite tracks of his are remixes of popular songs like Frank Ocean‘s “Thinkin’ Bout You”. With big-name artists already lining up to have Motez work his magic on their tunes, I think he is a producer to watch out for.
Its hard to get someone to want to break it down in a coffee shop, but that’s exactly what’s happening right now as I’m typing this and listening to Motez’ newest release: “Gas Pedal (Motez Edit)” by Sage the Gemini. I’ll definitely be listening to this track on repeat.

This is the continuation to a post I made a few days ago about young and talented DJs. What I like about these two youngins’ is how they successfully use instruments you don’t hear very often in the EDM world.
Bakermat is another 1991-er who hails from the Netherlands. Bakermat is my favorite artist of the moment — not only because he uses the saxophone ALL the time, but also because his music is consistently good (read: Sax is BACK). Which is why picking only a few songs to spotlight is sooooo difficult. Eeny-meeny-miny-moe:
Faul is a 22-year-old from Paris who sometimes tours with Bakermat. “Changes” featuring Wad Ad and “Happy Endings” are both so catchy and uplifting; it’s hard not to love the songs immediately.

It’s not just their age that ties these producers together– it’s their talent. Each exhibits a unique, bold sound that fits together (in my mind) and could only lead to a tour together (a girl can dream). I gotta wonder: if they are already creating such gems in their youth, what masterpieces await?
Flume, aka Aussie Harley Streten, put on one of my favorite shows of the year when he played at U Street in DC. I swear I had his music stuck in my head for 2 weeks following the show… I am in love with one of his newest releases “On Top” featuring T. Shirt. The lyrics are: “All that I want in this life is the chance to do my thing.” If that’s not the mantra for the Y Generation then I don’t know what is.

I had the pleasure of going to Ibiza this summer, and I am stoked to share that Deep House was EVERYWHERE. While at Amnesia in Ibiza, I asked a guy from New York if he liked deep house as much as me. “No,” he replied, “I need lyrics.” Well ya know what, Amurrica: time to take some note.
Let’s start with “On My Own”. T. Williams and Tala gently ease the progressive-types into the deep house groove. T. Williams, a UK native, is currently on tour with Disclosure. What are you waiting for? Go get a ticket!
Getting a little deeper now, this gem called “Boy I Know” by TruStep.
