Three Sundays later, and we have the return of our column. Apologies for the delay, but two things: one, my excuse is pretty good (yea, I blame Ultra), and two, this week’s edition is awesome. I called it the We-Missed-You edition for two reasons. One, duh, I missed y’all. Two, it features a few of my favorite songs by artists we all know and love — but haven’t heard them perform in their sets in years.
My first solo foray into the EDM world, I paid my buddy $10 and saw Avicii perform an intimate set at Pacha, and when he played this first song, I nearly cried of happiness, all hyped up, alone in my own Avicii-bubble. Years later, the feeling still returns. Then there’s Jacques Lu Cont, or the Thin White Duke, who somehow kept us in our seats, jumping with this Killers track in Madison Square Garden last year when the Swedish House Mafia — now dissolved — headlined the first electronic show there. Sit back, close your eyes, and know you’re in good hands… It’s time for #SyncBackSunday.
At the beginning of last month, goldenboy superproducer Avicii announced a project in which he’d review submissions for melodies, basslines, beats, rhythms, breaks and effects to create one internationally-collaborative track. Reminiscent of the days of The Postal Service (who are, by the way, back on tour…?!), mailing recordings of vocals and effects crosscountry back in 2003 to create hits like “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight”, Avicii x You.com received nearly 13,000 submissions from 4000+ artists in 140 countries. What resulted is a happy, light, bouncy house tune that one will be sure to hear in Avicii sets. Melody, kian sang; bassline, DJ Naxsy; beat/rhythm, Martin Kupilas; break, ВАНЯ ХАКСИ; and effects, Jonathan Madray, Mateusz Kolata, and Christian Westphalen.
Avicii also recently celebrated 3 million likes on Facebook by releasing a new mix of “Your Love is So Amazing”. His video productions have been top-notch lately, so I thought I’d include it.
Update (2/07): The form for reservations is now available! Packages are available for 3, 5, 7, or 10 nights during Miami Music Week (March 15-25), starting at $550/night. Get there soon if you’re interested — rooms are going fast!
At long last, the official release for Avicii & Nicky Romero’s 2012 mega-hit, retitled “I Could Be The One”, has arrived! And with it, the best video yet from the 3rd greatest DJ world-over… Enjoy, and happy New Year!
The tweet-happy producer-duo Markus Garcia and Jerome Potter, aka LOL Boys, have recently announced a split, after four years of awesome production. Jerome announced on Facebook that the LOL Boys were going on a hiatus to take time to work on their solo craft, but as a parting gift to their devoted following, the Boys released a whole package of edits in a glorious 40-minute mix for The Fader. This edit of Avicii’s “Levels” is outrageously fresh, as well as this cut of “Call Me Maybe”…
This track was a big favorite of mine when it was first heard a few months ago during Avicii’s New Years Eve bash in New York, and finally, I can offer you the full mix, in all its glory. Delicate vocals by Mr. Turner fuse blissfully into the perfectly-ethereal beats powered by the Avicii we’ve come to know and love in this solid house anthem. A+
This 15-y.o Swede is on a freakin’ roll. Mister Lido‘s taken on some of the biggest names in EDM and given their overplayed originals beautiful rebirths. Even his originals (yes, the fifteen y.o has ORIGINALS, what?!) are shnexxxxy!
