So I tripped across these two incredible Beatles remixes — yes, remixes of Beatles songs, scandalous. But no, here Pretty Lights fave Gramatik takes on the challenge “Don’t Let Me Down” and transforms it into a bass-heavy, tripped-out groove fest:

Then there’s the recent uprising of Feature Cuts, a Dallas-based producer who, after mixing primarily rap and hiphop albums, decided in 2011 to convert to EDM production. Fast forward a period of mere months, and I’m headbangin’ right along to this wompity “Eleanor Rigby” takeover:

“Over a century ago Thomas Edison got the patent for a device which would “do for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear”. He called it the Kinetoscope. He was not only amongst the first to record video, he was also the first person to own the copyright to a motion picture.

“Because of Edison’s patents for the motion pictures it was close to financially impossible to create motion pictures in the North American east coast. The movie studios therefor relocated to California, and founded what we today call Hollywood. The reason was mostly because there was no patent. There was also no copyright to speak of, so the studios could copy old stories and make movies out of them – like Fantasia, one of Disneys biggest hits ever.”

– The Pirate Bay

“So FUCK ACTA, SOPA, PIPA and any bill that wants to give corporations the power to regulate and censor the internet, especially if those same corporations built their empires solely on copyright infringement!”

– Gramatik

Amen. And props to an awesome new EP, #digitalfreedom (available for free, of course!), by the ridiculously-talented Pretty Lights-managed Slovenian producer Gramatik. Choice favorites:

This may be about the most rockin’ idea I’ve ever heard. An epic merger of “mountains and music”, the SnowMont Music Festival is scheduled to shake things up at Vermont’s Killington Ski Resort, the largest in the eastern U.S., in just over a month, March 30th to April 1st. Thrown by the same folks as the ones behind SnowBall Music Fest in Vail Valley, CO, and SnowGlobe Music Fest in Lake Tahoe, CA, this epic event offers tickets to skiing or snowboarding in glorious New England powder during your days (it spans three), and spending your nights with friends like Kaskade, Diplo, Porter Robinson, and Gramatik. With the on-again-off-again way this winter’s acted till now, this is probably the most perfect way to enjoy this last icy bit that seems to have snuck up on us! Some of the many acts I’m excited for…

Gramatik – In My City
♬ Passion Pit – Sleepyhead (Borgore Remix)
♬ Vampire Weekend – The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance (Chromeo remix)
Le Castle Vania – Messiah (Haydn Hoffman Dubstep Edit)

What was I thinking? I had no right to go and post about chilled out music without including the almighty Gramatik. So here’s your own post, good sir. Where to start with this unbelievable Slovenian deej… Signed to Pretty Lights’ label, this dude’s been pumping out winners left and right since his teenage years. Cognizant or not, you’ve probably already heard his crazy good remix of Stairway to Heaven, which flew to the top of the web charts without so much as a single facebook post by the creator. Or maybe you heard him perform at this past year’s Electric Zoo NY on the morning of the final day. In any case, kick back to these awesome new tunes (all original mixes), then grab his first full album on the PL label, “Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1,” fo’ FREE.
