★ Dash Berlin ft. Kate Walsh – When You Were Around (Album Version)

One of the things on which this blog subsists are the bizarre connections drawn between music of such a wide range of varietals; trap remixes of indie music meld with slow-tempo’d pop makeovers in a seamless juxtaposition formulated from top hits, best searches and suggestions, and (if I may be so presumptuous) a keen eye on the charts. So here Scuba sits, staring out into an incredibly foggy Manhattan abyss, and he can only think, “Today is for trance.”

With ASOT 600: NYC tickets on the verge of sale, it was too fitting to be falling back in love with these light, low-stress beats of ethereal happiness. Dutch master Dash Berlin is a particular favorite, with some beautiful videos to match his painstakingly-perfect studio productions. Fingers crossed he’ll be joining us March 30th for #ASOT600NYC…!

These babies are just too good. In the span of one week, we were treated to an Extended Play (EP) from two insanely good electronic artists, U.S.’s Minnesota and Canada’s finest, OVERWERK. Both Minnesota and Overwerk continue to experiment with their craft — part electronic, part dubstep, part drum ‘n’ bass, mostly indescribable — taking slow-tempo rhythms and building masterpieces out of carefully articulated bells and whistles (not literally). Minnesota’s Altered States has a more otherworldly feeling to it (I swear some of the sound effects sound like spaceships flying overhead), while Overwerk’s aptly-titled After Hours adds a spooky side to his unmercifully grinding beats. Take a listen, send some love, then get Minnesota and Overwerk’s entire albums FREE from the source to hear the rest!

Here’s some news poised to ripple your soundwaves… RPM Worldwide (Pacha NYC creators and NYC nightlife mega-promoters — think Summer of EDM, Governor’s Beach, etc.) and the EMM Group (a major NY restaurant and nightlife agency) have joined forces to open a new EDM club called Finale NYC. The club has been described “like a padded vault”, and bears some structural resemblance to Pacha, with a descending grand staircase entrance, as well as some audio similarities, boasting a top-notch system said to rival only that of Pacha’s itself (who, for the record, imported their Dynacord alpha concept speakers from Germany). Beyond that, however, the similarities fade, as the club has a maximum capacity of only 600, and is lined top-to-bottom in tufted blue leather…

OWSLA-signed Corey Baker, aka Kill Paris, has been producing some of the smoothest dub lately. His recent collaboration with mooombah-wizard Dillon Francis on a remix of (also OWSLA-signed) Monsta left my head spinning. Then there’s “Shades of Funk,” in which the self-categorized “Future Disco” master offers no relent from his wompy dub, as he infuses in the silkiest of funk rhythms. Good sh*t!

♬ Major Lazer – Jah No Partial (feat. Flux Pavilion) or $

Disregarding my past reservations for Major Lazer, I threw myself into this new one… and loved it! A feeling of part M.I.A., part Skrillex, part I-don’t-know-what, it feels dang good. This, and the recently-dropped Hot Chip reproduction of “Look At Where We Are” (a kinda painfully slow original) with another fave, Junior Blender, and I’m a new convert.

Update (10/27): Tickets are on sale here, though we’re not sure why the link was removed from the official site…

Update (10/26): Via Pacha’s facebook, the official lineup is: Afrojack, R3hab, Shermanology, Quintino & Bobby Burns! Tickets go on sale TOMORROW, Tuesday, at noon on the Jacked NYE site.

Looks like we can add the Jacked crew (think R3hab, Sidney Samson, Shermanology, Quintino…) to our list of New Years Eve parties here in the big apple. In conjunction with the ubiquitous Pacha NYC, they’ll be throwing a party of epic proportions out on Pier 94 this December. More info to come…but in the meantime, get yourself some TRAP-happy Afrojack knockouts!

This isn’t the type of music I typically write about, but I can’t help but share my love for Sufjan Stevens. The Detroit-native studied at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, then Hope College, and eventually attained an MFA at The New School. But besides his impressive resume, Sufjan (which means ‘comes with a sword’ in Persian and Arabic) writes, sings, and plays more instruments than you can count on your fingers — oftentimes playing the parts of his pieces himself, overlapping the recordings and merging them into one painstakingly-tedious, beautiful work of art.

This year, the usually quiet and inconspicuous Sufjan announced a tour titled, “The Sirfjam Stephanapolous Christmas Sing-A-Long Seasonal Affective Disorder Spectacular Music Pageant Variety Show Disaster” (tickets after the jump!) to promote the expansion of a 2006 album, “Songs for Christmas: Vols. 1-5″, this part entitled, “Silver & Gold”, to be released by his label Asthmatic Kitty Records November 13. Here are some of my favorites of his previously-released carols, followed by some super-sweet mixes… So be sure to catch him live — it’s a lucky chance!

★ Sujfan Stevens – Sister Winter
♬ Sufjan Stevens – Amazing Grace

Can’t get over how good the Shigeto mix is…and always diggin’ the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!

The way the new, sleepy backbeats of trap music fuse with high-charged, intense songs as such a perfect-fitting backbone is…nothing short of remarkable. Songs played to death (I’m thinking Levels) are reinvented into epic lounge backdrop; you’re guaranteed to find yourself starting to nod along the second these beautiful, beautiful reworks pop on. Though I hate to do so, the first song I’m posting is a radio rip; can’t all be as lucky as miss Annie Mac over on the BBC… But also check out the Flux and La Roux to follow, and you’ll really get knocked off your feet…

★ Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch – Sweet Nothing (Diplo & Grandtheft Trapstyle Remix)

U.S. wunderkind James Egbert first made news with “Back to Life”, then remixed to perfection by 3LAU (and featured in our monster post-party mixtape Well What Now?!). Recently, he took on Earth, Wind & Fire with a mighty force of his own…
