As soon as I started, I knew it had to be reposted. Too good.
Church,
I got to go to the Macklemore concert on Friday night. If you want to hear about how that went, ask me, seriously, I want to talk about it until I die. The whole thing was great; but the best part was when Macklemore sang “Same Love.” Augustana’s gym was filled to the ceiling with 5,000 people, mostly aged 18-25, and decked out in thrift store gear (American flag bro-tanks, neon Nikes, MC Hammer pants. My Cowboy boyfriend wore Cowboy boots…not ironically….). The arena was brimming with excitement and adrenaline during every song, but when he started to play “Same Love,” the place about collapsed. Why? While the song is popular everywhere, no one, maybe not even Macklemore, feels its true tension like we do in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. If you’re not familiar, here’s the song [above].

Gotta hand it to T-Swift and 23-y.o. Belarusian Yashar Gasanov, who dubbed over her track “Safe & Sound” about a year ago, but never really got the recognition he sincerely deserves! Especially with this magical video of fiery orchids…wow.
Ultra, forever.

Waking up to this started one helluva throwback thursday. And while I’d like nothing more than to spend a few hours writing up a full review of my experiences at this year’s especially-magnificent Ultra Music Festival, I am bound to the limits of time, energy, and other such raver problems, and as such, can only offer a succinct, bulleted list of my personal highlights from this year. Happy Ultra!

Stumbled upon this beautiful time lapse video accompanying the melodic dubstep of British wunderkind Robert Card, aka Blackmill. Can never get enough of this kinda stuff. You might remember his remix of Ellie Goulding’s cover of “Your Song”? Pretty awesome. One more longtime favorite:
#SyncBackSunday – we-missed-you edition

Three Sundays later, and we have the return of our column. Apologies for the delay, but two things: one, my excuse is pretty good (yea, I blame Ultra), and two, this week’s edition is awesome. I called it the We-Missed-You edition for two reasons. One, duh, I missed y’all. Two, it features a few of my favorite songs by artists we all know and love — but haven’t heard them perform in their sets in years.
My first solo foray into the EDM world, I paid my buddy $10 and saw Avicii perform an intimate set at Pacha, and when he played this first song, I nearly cried of happiness, all hyped up, alone in my own Avicii-bubble. Years later, the feeling still returns. Then there’s Jacques Lu Cont, or the Thin White Duke, who somehow kept us in our seats, jumping with this Killers track in Madison Square Garden last year when the Swedish House Mafia — now dissolved — headlined the first electronic show there. Sit back, close your eyes, and know you’re in good hands… It’s time for #SyncBackSunday.

EVENT: Veld Fest 13 — MORE ADDITIONS!!

Update (4/06): Annnnnd Veld got even better, adding brilliance in the names of Mark Oliver, Manzone & Strong, the Sour djs, and Greg Gow. Convinced yet?
One of my favorite festivals of summer ’12 was Toronto’s first-timer Veld Fest, a small, sunny, two-stage event spread out in a beautiful Canadian field. Yesterday, they held a secret presale for previous festival-goers, and though most of the lineup had yet to be released, my trusty group of bandits and I quickly sprung for the dirt-cheap VIP (read: $195 for two days; Electric Daisy Carnival is over $400 for the day and a half). Then the image above was published, and I almost lost it.
The Veld producers have put together such an astoundingly talented lineup this year, featuring the favorites from last year like Steve Aoki, Krewella, and Canada’s-own Deadmau5, mixed with rising stars like Candyland, Overwerk, and Seven Lions, and topped with a sprinkling of industry tried-and-true talents like Above & Beyond, Kaskade, Dada Life, Sub Focus — even Danny T! I can’t get over this.
Go get tickets TODAY OVER HERE at 10AM!

You can’t even imagine my look of surprise upon exiting the Ultra Festival grounds following Day 1 this past weekend to solemn, darkly-dressed greeters wordlessly dispersing masks with the Daft Punk album art. With a giant projection of the same animation as used during the SNL advert played on repeat against the building facing the festival exit, the French Punk duo continued to tease its biggest fans as they trudged home throughout the rest of the weekend; Nile Rodgers, their producer, was spotted backstage day two, and the Daft-men themselves were even spotted watching on as the Swedish House Mafia waved their epic goodbye. Would they surprise everyone with a short performance?! Or a new song, from their first album in seven years?!
Well, no, as it turned out. But the guys did officially announce that “Random Access Memories” would be released May 21, posting 13 unnamed tracks for $11.99 to pre-order on iTunes! In the meantime, enjoy some of my favorite Daft Punk classics, as mixed by Panic City, HLM, Xristo, and TheFatRat, and GET EXCITED !!
mmmm it’s magic
