13-11-18 ta-ku

One of my favorite aspects of electronic music gaining popularity is the influx of genre-merging. Many producers, such as Australia’s Ta-Ku, stem from a different musical background and are bringing a fresh perspective to the worn-out “eat sleep rave repeat”. Ta-ku can cut ‘n’ chop hip hop beats like nobody’s business, and takes a refreshingly groovy spin on electronic tracks. Check out his take on the UK electronic duo, AlunaGeorge:

★ AlunaGeorge – Best Be Believing (Ta-ku Remix)

His debut album Songs to Break Up To showcases Ta-Ku’s softer side and reminds us that electronic music can break away from big-room drops and oozy soul. My favorite song from his album is “We Were in Love”, a lo-fi lounge track with addicting vocal loops…

13-11-15 thomas jack

20-year-old Aussie deej hits money again with his latest, a beautiful, instrument-filled remix of “Atlas Hands”. Thomas Jack has really grown into his own with these happy-go-lucky, funkier pop songs. Each new remix has an unexpected twist to it that gives it a smooth, beachy feel… great stuff :)

★ Mike Shinoda & Skylar Grey – Where’d You Go (Murdok Dubstep Remix)

Absence and loss can occur as two different types. The first type is often like missing something you once had a right to. A ring broken, letter burned or book stolen. The second is more abstract. Sometimes described as a glass of water that cannot be refilled; as the water is removed the glass is emptied. A promise broken, memory forgotten or pattern changed. The third type is missing something you never had. A glass empty, song never heard or a feeling never felt.

13-11-09 wunderkind

This is the continuation to a post I made a few days ago about young and talented DJs. What I like about these two youngins’ is how they successfully use instruments you don’t hear very often in the EDM world.

Bakermat is another 1991-er who hails from the Netherlands. Bakermat is my favorite artist of the moment — not only because he uses the saxophone ALL the time, but also because his music is consistently good (read: Sax is BACK). Which is why picking only a few songs to spotlight is sooooo difficult. Eeny-meeny-miny-moe:

♬ Bakermat – Brighter Days
★ Bakermat – Leven

Faul is a 22-year-old from Paris who sometimes tours with Bakermat. “Changes” featuring Wad Ad and “Happy Endings” are both so catchy and uplifting; it’s hard not to love the songs immediately.

13-11-09 roseland closing

I’d heard some rumors, and on October 25th, Roseland confirmed the bad news: they will be shuttering their doors at the end of April ’14. As with the passing of any dear one, there are a slew of shows planned to honor its glorious near-century. But before we start the tears, we want to know: who would you most want to see? I don’t care if it’s someone you’ve seen there, saw at Ultra, or want to see for the first time.

It’s not just their age that ties these producers together– it’s their talent. Each exhibits a unique, bold sound that fits together (in my mind) and could only lead to a tour together (a girl can dream). I gotta wonder: if they are already creating such gems in their youth, what masterpieces await?

Flume, aka Aussie Harley Streten, put on one of my favorite shows of the year when he played at U Street in DC. I swear I had his music stuck in my head for 2 weeks following the show…  I am in love with one of his newest releases “On Top” featuring T. Shirt. The lyrics are: “All that I want in this life is the chance to do my thing.” If that’s not the mantra for the Y Generation then I don’t know what is.

★ Stromae – Formidable

Francophile or not, this video and song are so powerful you can’t help but empathize. As iTunes’ #1 French popstar Stromae sings of a love (and by default, himself) lost, the beat syncs in and a twisted story of strings and loss plays out.

Now, for the true Frenchies out there…

★ Parov Stelar – Catgroove

While we all grieve amidst the news of Roseland’s shuttering, I thought it only proper to pay respect to its original days in 1919 as a swing club, by presenting a recent favorite Austrian DJ who takes fun, bouncy swing and adds an extra dance-music kick. Parov Stelar performs with a band during his live shows, to create individually beautiful performances that mimic two other favorite performers, Wax Tailor and Gramatik.
