Toronto-based Vanic just remixed our favorite do-over of Bon Iver’s classic “Skinny Love”, by Birdy… the perfect cure to a stormy week.

★ Mike Shinoda & Skylar Grey – Where’d You Go (Murdok Dubstep Remix)

Absence and loss can occur as two different types. The first type is often like missing something you once had a right to. A ring broken, letter burned or book stolen. The second is more abstract. Sometimes described as a glass of water that cannot be refilled; as the water is removed the glass is emptied. A promise broken, memory forgotten or pattern changed. The third type is missing something you never had. A glass empty, song never heard or a feeling never felt.

13-08-11 verve first ladies

There’s no other way to say it: this album is insanely good. When Verve Records isn’t busy producing jazz albums by some of the greatest musicians in history, they shuffle through the EDM pileup to produce “Verve Remixed” — compilation albums of their famous classics reinterpreted by the world’s best DJs — always to fantastic results. I purchased (yes, purchased) their box set of Volumes 1-4 (iTunes) but this latest collection, “The First Ladies” (iTunes), tops the rest. Ella Fitz remixed by Maya Jane Coles? Dinah Washington meets DJ Carnage??? Nina Simone vs. Zed’s Dead?!?! Unreal. Check out my favorite track, remixed by the on-fire Flume, below, then go spend $10 and gift yourself the greatest week of music you’ve had in a while.

★ Marlena Shaw – Woman Of The Ghetto (Flume’s Jackin’ House
Mix)

♬ Pretty Lights – Around the Block

One of my favorite festival mainstays, Pretty Lights, has a kickass new record coming out just in time for July, “A Color Map of the Sun” (stream it FREE here!). Silky smooth like all the ones before it, this album adds a new dimension through the use of old-timey instruments Derek spent months traveling many miles to dig up. Tickets for the official launch party at the new underground club Output in Brooklyn go on sale at NOON TODAY, and are capped at only 800 people so act fast! Otherwise, you can catch pretty lights at Camp Bisco, Electric Forest, and a number of other amazing festivals across the U.S.

♬ Daft Punk – Contact

The mashups, tributes, and remixes of Daft Punk‘s just-released album, “Random Access Memories” (on iTunes now!), arrive unabated and in such quick succession it’s impossible to keep up with them. Here are just a few of my favorites, starting with the bizarrely-perfect merger of 2001: A Space Odyssey with the track “Contact”, above. With this latest success, Daft Punk prove their timelessness and universality one. more. time.

★ Daft Punk – Doin’ It Right (Unlike Pluto Remix)
♬ Daft Punk – Random Access Memories (Vanderway Edit)
♬ Daft Punk – Lose Yourself to Dance ft. Pharrell Williams (Yashar Gasanov Dubstep Remix)

PS, did I mention Daft Punk has officially announced they will be remixing the entire album themselves? Oh giggity…

★ Taylor Swift – Safe & Sound (Yashar Gasanov Dubstep Remix)

Gotta hand it to T-Swift and 23-y.o. Belarusian Yashar Gasanov, who dubbed over her track “Safe & Sound” about a year ago, but never really got the recognition he sincerely deserves! Especially with this magical video of fiery orchids…wow.

♬ Blackmill – Evil Beauty

Stumbled upon this beautiful time lapse video accompanying the melodic dubstep of British wunderkind Robert Card, aka Blackmill. Can never get enough of this kinda stuff. You might remember his remix of Ellie Goulding’s cover of “Your Song”? Pretty awesome. One more longtime favorite:

These babies are just too good. In the span of one week, we were treated to an Extended Play (EP) from two insanely good electronic artists, U.S.’s Minnesota and Canada’s finest, OVERWERK. Both Minnesota and Overwerk continue to experiment with their craft — part electronic, part dubstep, part drum ‘n’ bass, mostly indescribable — taking slow-tempo rhythms and building masterpieces out of carefully articulated bells and whistles (not literally). Minnesota’s Altered States has a more otherworldly feeling to it (I swear some of the sound effects sound like spaceships flying overhead), while Overwerk’s aptly-titled After Hours adds a spooky side to his unmercifully grinding beats. Take a listen, send some love, then get Minnesota and Overwerk’s entire albums FREE from the source to hear the rest!
